The ECO4 scheme, part of the UK’s efforts to promote energy efficiency, has unfortunately been met with scepticism, with some labelling it as a scam. This reaction isn’t entirely surprising partly due to the program’s generous offering—FREE solar panels, insulation, and air source heat pumps for eligible UK households—which may seem too good to be true.
Additionally, the government’s modest efforts in promoting this initiative have left many unaware of its benefits. Consequently, the responsibility of raising awareness about this beneficial program has largely fallen on organisations like the Energy Advice Helpline.
What you should know about ECO4? #
ECO4 (Energy Company Obligation) is a government initiative in the UK designed to help reduce carbon emissions and tackle fuel poverty. Under this scheme, larger energy suppliers are obligated to help households improve their energy efficiency through measures such as installing insulation or more efficient heating systems. This scheme targets low-income households and those in underprivileged areas, aiming to enhance their energy efficiency and reduce overall energy bills. eligible.

Why do people think ECO4 is a scam? #
- Misunderstanding and Misinformation: Energy schemes can be complex, and misunderstandings are common. Misinformation can spread quickly on social media, where unverified claims can be presented as facts.
- Impersonation Scams: Unfortunately, legitimate schemes like ECO4 can be mimicked by scammers. These impostors might contact unsuspecting individuals, claiming to offer energy grants or services in an attempt to solicit personal information or financial details. Never give out your bank details!
- Overzealous Marketing: Some legitimate providers might use aggressive or misleading marketing tactics to promote their services, which can lead to distrust and skepticism among consumers.

Filled forms in similar to these ages ago but never had anything since thought would have heard something by now.
A company “Ecowise Installations” contacted me, subsequently sent a Surveyor and agreed that Government ECO4 grant was approved. Since then that was 06.06.24 I have not been abler to contact the company on the mobile given (07355 035814) nor their company number listed on their website of 0800 035 3356. Am I a part of an elaborate scam?

Please could you let me know how to ensure we get reliable and regulated contractors. We have had an initial survey but are wary of ‘ cowboy’ sub contractors. What do we look for re regulatory bodies ? Thanks. Joy
To ensure you’re using reliable and regulated contractors for ECO4, follow these steps:
TrustMark Registered: Only hire contractors registered with TrustMark, the government-backed quality scheme. Check their registration on the TrustMark website.
PAS 2035 Compliant: Make sure contractors follow PAS 2035, the standard for energy-efficient work under ECO4. They should work with a certified Retrofit Coordinator.
Gas Safe Registered: For gas work (like boilers), ensure the contractor is Gas Safe Registered. Verify their registration at the Gas Safe Register.
NICEIC or NAPIT: For electrical work, check if the contractor is registered with NICEIC or NAPIT, the leading electrical safety bodies.
MCS Certified: If you’re installing renewable energy (e.g., solar panels), the installer should be MCS certified.
These checks will help you avoid “cowboy” contractors and ensure quality work.
Hi can you advise I had work started under eco4 scheme for external wall insulation .can the funder pull out in middle of job .I read that due to cost they can pull out anytime n leave customer in limbo .Is this possible ?
Hi Kulsum,
Thank you for contacting us, we appreciate your comment.
While it’s technically possible for funding to be withdrawn under certain circumstances, it’s very rare and has never occurred on the thousands of installations we have been involved in.
Here’s why you shouldn’t worry:
Reputable Installers: Only the best installers with the right accreditations can work on the ECO4 scheme and we only work with trustworthy installers who have a proven track record of delivering high-quality work that meets ECO4 standards. This significantly reduces the risk of funding withdrawal due to installation issues.
Thorough Assessments: Before any work begins, a thorough assessment of your property is carried out to ensure it’s suitable for the chosen measure and that the installation can be completed successfully. This helps avoid unexpected problems that could jeopardise funding.
Regular Monitoring: The installation process is monitored throughout to ensure it complies with ECO4 guidelines. This minimises the chance of any issues arising that could lead to funding being withdrawn.
Open Communication – We maintain open communication with you throughout the process, keeping you informed of progress and addressing any concerns promptly.
In the unlikely event that there is a problem with the installation, we will work closely with you and the installer to find a solution and ensure the work is completed to the required standards.
Kind Regards,
The Energy Advice Helpline Team.
I applied online for a new boiler to replace one that is 47 years old. I have Cardiovascular disease, Ischaemic heart disease, Diabetes, An implanted heart pacemaker, COPD & Heart Failure, I receive Industrial Disease Benefit & I was retired aged 48 due to these health problems. My claim was rejected without being given an explanation. I received a call yesterday about Double Glazing under the scheme. I hung up thinking this was a scam? If it wasn’t then please phone back. You have the details.
Hello Reginald, sorry we did not get back to you about your application. We have just sent you an email to explain why you didnt qualify for the grant. Unfortunately, we’re not able to help you at this time. Your home has a “D” energy efficiency rating on its Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), and we currently don’t have any Energy Assessors in your area who can work on properties with that rating.
But Please give a call to the company that offered you double glazing.
I have had 3 different companies to asses my eligibility confirm that I am complete a survey and on leaving assure me that they will be in touch within 14 days. Each one of them never contacted me again. This is why its regarded as a Scam. Can the reason being that I already have cavity wall installation also loft installation that they feel that it will not be in there interest?. Your comments views would be appreciated.

We apologise for taking long to respond. You qualify for the Eco4 grant. We’ve tried calling you, but haven’t been able to reach you. Please call us back at 0800 802 1869 at your earliest convenience.
Please would you confirm that EC04 does NOT apply to Park Homes – it would also help if this was made clear on your Web Page. Thanks
