URGENT: Submit Your Meter Reading Before October 1st

This is a critical reminder for all UK households. The new Energy Price Cap comes into force this Sunday, October 1st. If you do not have a smart meter that sends readings automatically, you need to take action this weekend.

Why must I submit a reading? If you do not submit a meter reading to your supplier by midnight on September 30th (or as close to it as possible), your supplier will estimate how much energy you used. Because we are moving from a cheaper rate in September to a more expensive rate in October, an estimate could work against you. The supplier might assume you used more energy in “expensive October” than you actually did.

By submitting a reading, you draw a line in the sand. You ensure that every unit of electricity or gas you used up until Saturday night is billed at the lower summer rate. This prevents you from overpaying on your next bill.

How to do it

  1. Read your gas and electricity meters on Saturday, 30th September.
  2. Log in to your supplier’s app or website.
  3. Enter the numbers clearly.
  4. Take a photo of the meter for your records, just in case of any disputes later.

If you are on a Smart Meter, this should happen automatically, but we always recommend checking your in-home display to be sure it is sending data. If the display is blank or hasn’t updated, submit a manual reading just to be safe.
