Maximising Solar Efficiency in a British Winter

Scroll

“Does solar work in the UK winter?” It’s a question we hear every November. The short answer is yes—but differently. While you won’t see the 4 PM sun of July, your panels are still generating electricity from diffused light (light that passes through clouds).

The Winter Strategy

In winter, the sun is lower and the days are shorter. To maximize efficiency:

  1. Keep Panels Clean: Winter grime and salt can block light.
  1. Rely on the Battery: This is when the Economy 7 integration is most valuable. Since your panels might only fill the battery to 30%, you use the cheap night-time grid rate to top it up to 100%.

Thermal Efficiency

Interestingly, solar panels are actually more efficient in cold temperatures than in extreme heat. As long as there is light, they are producing. By combining this generation with a smart battery, you ensure that even the smallest amount of winter sunshine is captured and used, rather than wasted.
