Happy New Year! As the fireworks fade and we settle into 2026, the energy landscape has shifted once again. As of today (January 1st), the new Energy Price Cap is officially live. The rates have adjusted slightly to the new annual average of £1,758 for a typical dual-fuel household.
What has changed? While the headline figure has risen marginally (by roughly £3 a year compared to December), the underlying costs have shifted. The unit rate for electricity has nudged up slightly due to network costs, while gas remains relatively stable. Crucially, Standing Charges remain high. This means that even if you are incredibly frugal with your energy use, you will still pay over £300 a year just to be connected to the grid.
Resolutions for 2026 Instead of just accepting these high costs, make 2026 the year you take back control. The cheapest energy is the energy you don’t use.
- Resolution 1: Submit a Reading. Start the year with a clean slate. Submit a meter reading today so you aren’t charged “estimated” holiday usage at the new rates.
- Resolution 2: Check the Fabric. Walk around your house on a windy day. Can you feel a breeze near the windows? Is the loft hatch rattling? These are leaks in your wallet.
- Resolution 3: Apply for a Grant. This is the big one. If your home is leaking heat, no amount of tariff switching will solve the problem. Government grants are available now for insulation and heating upgrades.
