Labour’s GB Energy Would Create Secure Jobs

Labour’s proposal of a new publicly owned energy company (GB Energy), if they were to win the next general election, has been met with some criticism surrounding the impact it may have on jobs in the oil and gas sector.

The Scottish National Party (SNP) believe that Scottish jobs could be at risk thanks to Labour’s commitment to no longer issuing new oil and gas licences and raising taxes on company profits.

Starmer Assurance

Sir Kier Starmer has assured that Labour has planned for this, however. Safeguarding replacement jobs will span generations.

In an interview with BBC Radio Scotland, Starmer also confirmed that oil and gas would be a vital part of the UK energy mix for the foreseeable and that they will not “turn the pipes off instantaneously.”

The Transition Away from Fossil Fuels with GB Energy

He urged that we need to move away from fossil fuels and even this could create jobs in Scotland for the next few decades.

Just over ten years ago, coal-fired power made up 40% of the electricity generated for the UK and is about to end in the latter half of this year. Starmer believes that when coal began coming to an end, a big mistake was that no plan for the future was set in stone by the current government.

We have to plan for the future, do the transition properly – and that is the best way to make sure jobs are there, not just for this generation, but for the next and the generation after that”.

GB Energy Backing & Attacking

  • GB Energy has been shown support by Sir Patrick Vallance. He believes clean power was not being employed in the way it should be.
  • Claire Coutinho, Conservative Energy Secretary, has shown distaste towards the plan, claiming it is unfunded.
  • The Conservatives believe that the aim to reduce bills by £300 would have no impact on costs.
  • The Green Party stated that the planned investment is not substantial enough to hit Labour’s supposed targets of net zero by 2030.
  • Labour has been mocked for using a similar logo to that of a small company in the US.

Great British Energy will be headquartered in Scotland, a region already pivotal to the UK’s oil, gas, and offshore wind industries. By focusing on developing clean energy industries, Labour aims to ensure that jobs and supply chains are retained within the UK.
