Holiday Support: Emergency Numbers & Deadlines

The holidays can be a stressful time if you are worried about energy, or if something goes wrong with your supply. With many customer service centres closing for the bank holidays, it is vital to know who to call if you have an issue over the Christmas break.

Power Cuts If you have a power cut, do not call your supplier (like British Gas or OVO). They cannot fix the cables. Instead, call 105.

  • It is a free service available 24/7.
  • It connects you directly to your local Distribution Network Operator (DNO) who manages the cables in your street.
  • They can tell you if there is a known fault in your area and when it will be fixed.

Prepayment Meters If you are on a prepayment meter, try to top up enough credit now to last until the New Year. If you do run out of credit and the shops are closed, most suppliers have an “Emergency Credit” function on the meter (usually £5 or £10).

  • Warning: If you use Emergency Credit, you must pay it back in full next time you top up.
  • Check your supplier’s website now for their specific emergency contact number and write it down.

Cold Weather Payments With temperatures forecast to drop, remember that if the temperature drops below zero for 7 consecutive days in your area, you may be due a £25 Cold Weather Payment. This is automatic for those on certain benefits, so you don’t need to apply.
