Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey is campaigning for pensioners, particularly those in areas like Durham, to be excused from the forthcoming energy bill increase. This plea follows research indicating that 102,000 pensioners in the region were disadvantaged by the removal of the winter fuel allowance.
The Impact of the Winter Fuel Allowance Removal
Mr Davey’s visit to Durham, alongside Councillor Amanda Hopgood, emphasises the significant financial burden placed on pensioners following the cessation of the winter fuel allowance. They are urging the government to, as a minimum, cancel the energy price rise for affected pensioners.
Energy Price Cap Increase
Energy regulator Ofgem has confirmed a further 6.4% rise in the energy price cap from April, adding to the financial strain already faced by many. A recent Liberal Democrat poll reveals that nine in ten UK adults concerned about heating costs have had to alter their heating habits to reduce bills.
Davey’s Position
Sir Ed Davey strongly criticises the Labour government’s decision to remove the winter fuel payment, describing it as “callous and heartless.” He highlights the difficult choices pensioners face between heating and eating, given the UK’s relatively low pension rates compared to other European countries.
“We have some of the lowest pensions in Europe and it’s so sad to think of pensioners needing to choose between eating or heating their homes. The least we can do for the most vulnerable in our society is to scrap the energy price rise for those pensioners who have had their winter fuel payment taken away. Inaction is not an option,” said Sir Ed Davey.
Local Support in Durham
Councillor Amanda Hopgood echoes these concerns, expressing dismay at the impact on pensioners in County Durham. She highlights the Durham County Council’s motion to reverse the cut and joins Davey’s call for an energy price rise exemption for affected pensioners.
“I’m dismayed that Labour betrayed our pensioners in this way. I’m proud that at Durham County Council we passed a motion calling on this cut to be reversed. I’m joining Ed in calling for the energy price rise to be scrapped for all those pensioners hit by the cut in County Durham and across the country,” stated Councillor Hopgood.
What This Means for Pensioners:
The proposed exemption aims to ease the financial pressure on pensioners, particularly those who have lost the winter fuel allowance. It’s vital for pensioners to stay informed about potential changes and seek available support.
