Avocados are under threat of extinction from the climate crisis

Climate experts warn that our beloved toast-topper of avocado is at risk as the climate crisis continues across the globe.

That’s because the most popular regions for growing avocados are set to shrink in size over the next few decades. The popular food requires lots of water to grow, meaning that droughts and extreme weather can ruin the crop. And with the climate crisis well underway, avocados will have to fight to survive in a world that is witnessing more and more extreme weather events.

They are thirsty plants that are ill-suited to a hotter, drought-prone planet which is where we’re heading if rich nations don’t act to cut their fossil fuel use and reduce emissions.

Scientists are warning that we could see up to 41% of avocado-growing land become unsuitable by 2050 because land will be too dry. A drier climate puts avocados particularly at risk, with just one avocado requiring 17 liters of water to grow.

Mexico is the largest producer of avocados worldwide, producing 2.5 million metric tons per year. This amounts to approximately 30% of global avocado production.

Unfortunately, the country is already experiencing huge challenges as a direct result of the climate crisis. Just this year, CNN reported that several neighborhoods in Mexico City had been without water for weeks because of the extreme weather conditions.

Jolis Bigirimana, an avocado farmer in Africa and president of Farmer’s Pride Burundi, said climate change “is a huge problem, especially for avocado growers“.

‘Grand theft of fruit’

Data released by Statista in January 2024 reveals that the United Kingdom is the 6th largest avocado consumer across the globe. The fruit has gained elite status as a ‘superfood’ thanks to its huge vitamin and mineral content. To name a few…vitamins C, E, K, and B6, as well as riboflavin, niacin, folate, pantothenic acid, magnesium, and potassium. All of these have helped the fruit achieve its super status.

Avocado production is crucial for developing economies such as Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Kenya, where agriculture is one of the most important sectors. And it seems the fruit is facing multiple lines of attack. In Mexico, they even have an avocado police, as the food has fallen victim to groups of organized crime! In 2016, avocado theft hit New Zealand before sweeping to California a year later, where a group of 3 men were fined $300,000 after stealing the fruit from a firm in Oxnard.

Avocado anxiety was raised again by former US President Donald Trump, whose 20% “border tax” spiked fears of hefty price increases for fruit-fans in America.

What other foods are at risk from the climate crisis?

4% of global suffers droughts every year. Climate experts warn that numbers will grow to 18% by the end of our century if global warming continues. This means that any foods that require lots of water for growth are at risk as droughts worsen in frequency and duration. Some of these foods on the ‘predicted extinction’ list are:

  • Chocolate
  • Bananas
  • Wine
  • Coffee
  • Peanuts

Data from the United Nations reveals that the number and duration of droughts has increased by 29% since 2000. Even worse, their findings reveal that since 1970, weather, climate and water hazards accounted for 50% of all disasters and 45% of all reported deaths.
