Those living with certain medical conditions can be eligible for these home improvements and can improve the energy efficiency of their homes.
What Home Upgrades Could You Get?
You can get help you with a variety of energy efficiency improvements, including:
- Insulation for you cavity and solid walls, as well as loft and floor insulation.
- Heating systems like air source heat pumps.
- Double glazing windows to keep in the heat.
These improvements can help to make your home warmer and more comfortable, which can help to improve your health and well-being.
How Am I Eligible Through my Medical Condition?
To be eligible for the free home energy upgrades you must have one of the following medical conditions:
- Cardiovascular Conditions: These conditions include heart disease, stroke, and even high blood pressure.
- Respiratory Diseases: These conditions include asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and emphysema.
- Limited Mobility: This includes conditions that make it hard for you to move, like arthritis or a disability.
- Immunosuppression: These include conditions such as HIV/AIDS or even cancer treatments that weaken immune systems.

Are There Any Additional Criteria to be Eligible for Free Home Energy Upgrades?
As well as living with one of these conditions, you must also fall under these additional criterion:
- Cold Home: You should be living in a cold home due to having poor insulation or inadequate heating.
- Condition Worsened: Your condition will be made worse by living in a cold home, confirming your eligibility.
How Can You Apply for Free Home Energy Upgrades?
If you think you may be eligible for ECO4. You will need to complete a referral form and send it to your local authority. One of the following are able to refer you:
- A Scottish Health Board
- A Welsh Health Board
- An NHS Foundation Trust
- An NHS Trust
Evidence
Any referral must be evidenced and provided by a relevant healthcare provider. This declaration must state that someone with one of the eligible health conditions is suffering in their cold home.
A healthcare provider can be:
- Someone listed in the General Practitioner Register, including GPs that are employed within the NHS or a private practice.
- An employee of an NHS Trust or NHS Foundation Trust. The practitioner must be working within a hospital or clinic that is owned by one of those trusts.
- An employee of the NHS Health Board.
