The UK’s smart meter rollout has hit a major milestone, with over 25 million installations, but new figures reveal a slowdown in deployment.
A Step Forward, But Momentum Slows
The UK’s transition to smart meters has reached a major milestone, with 25.15 million installations recorded since tracking began in 2012. This marks significant progress in the long-term push to modernise the UK’s energy system and help households better manage their energy use.
However, new data from ElectraLink shows that the pace of installations is slowing.
- February 2025 saw 194,000 installations, a 4% drop compared to February 2024.
- Installations in the first two months of 2025 were 13% lower than the same period last year.
The usual high-demand regions remain at the top of the installation charts:
✅ East England – 23,000 smart meters installed
✅ Southern England – 21,000 smart meters installed
✅ East Midlands – 19,000 smart meters installed
Can the UK Hit Its Smart Meter Targets?
While the slowdown raises concerns, the rollout remains ahead of its pace in earlier years. Installations in 2021, 2022, and 2023 all started at a slower rate.
The big question now is: Can the UK ramp up installations to meet its long-term targets, or is the rollout starting to stall?
