UK Residents Prioritise Home Energy Efficiency, But Barriers Remain

More and more people in the UK are keen to make their homes more energy-efficient, with 52% now seeing it as a priority – a significant jump from 37% in 2023. However, a new report from Santander reveals that many are still struggling to navigate the process and access available support.

Rising Interest in Energy Efficiency

The “Tomorrow’s Homes” report highlights a growing awareness of the benefits of energy-efficient homes. This is excellent news as the UK strives to meet its environmental targets and help households reduce their energy bills.

Key Barriers to Improvement

Despite this increased interest, several obstacles are preventing homeowners from taking action:

  • Upfront Costs: 57% of respondents cited the high cost of improvements as a major barrier.
  • Lack of Knowledge: A staggering two-thirds of people know little or nothing about government schemes designed to incentivise home improvements.
  • Financial Products: Similarly, 65% are unaware of financial products that could support energy-efficiency upgrades.
  • Finding Trusted Information: Nearly two-thirds struggle to find reliable information and guidance on home energy improvements.

What Would Help?

The report also identified several measures that would encourage homeowners to proceed with upgrades:

  • Government financial subsidies (64%)
  • Lower taxes, such as council tax or stamp duty rebates (61%)
  • Cashback rewards from banks (57%)
  • An online portal to find accredited tradespeople (49%)

Industry Initiatives

It is good to see that Companies such as Santander are responding to this need with partnerships with energy suppliers and installers, and also cashback incentives for customers. Their online Greener Homes Hub is also a great place to find information.
