Did you know that the 23rd of February is ‘ UK Helplines Awareness Day’?
Many people are unaware that there are hundreds of national and international helplines providing support to those going through challenging times. From general advice to financial and legal guidance – through to around-the-clock counselling for those suffering from serious physical or mental health conditions, drug addiction or abuse. Many of these helplines are run by dedicated volunteers; people who give their empathy and unwavering support to those in need.
It’s estimated that 60 million calls are made to helplines every day – yet these vital services often go unrecognised.
To remedy this, the ‘Helplines Partnership’ launched the first UK ‘Helplines Awareness Day’ in 2023. Generated by the idea that helplines often go unnoticed; the day aims to raise awareness and widely promote the essential services and support that they provide.
Why are Helplines Important?
When you consider these worrying statistics…
- 1 in 5 young people have a had a mental health condition at some point in their lives.
- 55% of responding helplines have reported an increase in crisis or suicidal calls since 2019.
- There were 171,490 calls received by National Domestic Abuse Helpline in 2022/23.
…it seems only right that helplines are awarded the same level of respect as other integral public services. Not only do helplines aim to improve lives – but in some cases…they can actually save them.
UK Helplines Awareness Day 2024 – What can you do to Support it?
The 2024 ‘UK Helplines Awareness Day’ campaign aims to highlight the need for helplines by showing the positive impact they continue to have on the daily lives of many. To do this, people are being asked to share their ‘helpline stories’ – whether they’ve accessed the services themselves, have worked or volunteered for them.
Helplines Partnership is encouraging people to upload creative works that describe the times when they’ve received support from helplines, the impact that this has had on their lives and why helplines should be contacted in times of need.
The submissions can be:
- Short film
- Artwork
- Poetry
- Short Stories
- Photographs
- Quotes
You can share these on social media using the hashtag #HelplinesAwarenessDay.
