Thousands of People Left With No Power After Storm Darragh

Pembrokeshirebased councillor Iwan Ward has sternly warned that residents are “going to die” because of the lack of heating caused by the destructive Storm Darragh that took hold on Saturday December 7th, leaving them with no power. Thousands have people have been left in the dark for three days following the storm, being warned that power may not return until Thursday!

No Calm After the Storm Darragh

It’s been called the ‘worst storm in decades’, with gusts that reached up to 58mph and 67mph in coastal areas being recorded.

The National Grid claimed that just under 10,000 homes in the south and west of Wales were without power as of Tuesday 10th of Decembe,r with Scottish Power adding that they were still seeing power outages in a total of 1,036 homes.

Residents of  Heol y Glyn have took to blaming the National Grid, stating that:

National Grid should have fixed this by now. Or they could have put a generator up here. It’s disgusting, I’m furious.

Many have been left feeling the same, scrambling and worrying about what to do next. These hostile weather events are beginning to become more frequent across the country, with floods being another force of nature putting people’s lives on hold.

The National Grid can and does take preventive measures for these events, but in many cases, forces of nature, like unprecedented strong winds, can prove too much for it to handle.

Shelter from the Storm with Complete Energy Independence

Storm Darragh leaving thousands with no power could be a wake up call for many to install home energy upgrades like solar panels, air source heat pumps, and insulation in their properties.

With these upgrades installed, households will begin to see a massive reduction in energy bills, as well as a large rise in the energy efficiency of their homes. But the important change would be energy independence, the perfect shelter from events like Storm Darragh.

Solar panels would allow you to create your own electricity. This electricity can then run an air source heat pump to heat your home, with sufficient insulation keeping all the warmth in.

Free Home Energy Upgrades

The best part is… these upgrades could be 100% completely free! If you:

  • Live in a home with a low EPC (energy efficiency rating)
  • Earn a total household income that is less that £31,000
  • Are receiving a means-tested benefit
  • Suffer from an eligible medical conditions.
