You could be eligible for a replacement fossil fuel heating system through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Introduced by the government, this scheme is available to people in England and Wales and can see you receive a £7,500 grant.
What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
You will receive a grant to replace your current fossil fuel heating systemāwhether it’s oil, gas, or electricāwith a biomass boiler or heat pump.
Per property, one grant is available for:
- Air Source Heat Pump ā you can receive Ā£7,500 for a heat pump. They use thermal energy in the outside air to warm your property comfortably. A highly efficient method they reduce carbon emissions and energy bills by using less energy.
- Ground Source Heat Pump ā Receive Ā£7,500. This includes water source heat pumps and those on shared ground loops.
- Biomass Boilers ā this can see you receive Ā£5,000. If your property is off the grid, biomass boilers create renewable energy from burning sources such as wood, plants and other organic matter.
What Makes You Eligible?

You must also plan to have the new heating system installed on or after 1 April 2022, if you havenāt already. Finally, you should be replacing a fossil fuel heating system.
Property Eligibility
Your home needs to have a valid Energy Performance Certificate and no recommendations for loft or cavity wall insulation outstanding.
Biomass Boiler
- You are in a rural location and your property is not connected to the grid.
- You obtain an emissions certificate for your current boiler that proves the emissions are kept low.
Newly built houses are ineligible for a grant unless they have completed construction and are equipped with a fossil-fuel boiler.
Social housing also disqualifies you from eligibility.
If you have built your property, you or the original owner must have done so themselves or contracted a builder to build it. Previous ownership by a business or organisation disqualifies the property from eligibility.
