Ripple Energy on the Brink of Collapse, Putting 20,000 Customers at Risk

A green energy company that enables households to co-own wind turbines and solar farms is facing administration, raising concerns for over 20,000 UK customers.

What’s Happening with Ripple Energy?

Ripple Energy – a renewable energy company known for offering people the chance to co-own green energy projects – has filed a formal notice of intention to appoint administrators. This move is often the first step towards a company going bust, unless a buyer steps in quickly.

Ripple’s unique model allowed customers to buy shares in solar or wind farms, with savings passed on through discounts on electricity bills from major suppliers like British Gas, Octopus Energy, and E.ON Next.

But despite its innovative approach, court documents show that Ripple Energy filed the notice on Monday, putting the future of the business and its 35 employees in question.

The company has confirmed it is working with corporate restructuring specialists Begbies Traynor, and has said operations will continue as normal during the sale process.

What Does This Mean for Ripple Customers?

While Ripple isn’t an energy supplier itself, customers may understandably be concerned about what happens next. The good news is that there should be no disruption to service for now, as the company continues trading while looking for a buyer.

Octopus Energy’s founder Greg Jackson acknowledged the situation and expressed a willingness to help if possible, but added that decisions are now in the hands of administrators and co-op partners.

Ripple’s CEO, Sarah Merrick, has championed community-owned clean energy since founding the business in 2017. Just last year she said:

“A clean energy revolution is underway in Britain, and it’s our mission to make sure real people are at the heart of it.”

A Tough Time for Green Innovators

The potential collapse of Ripple is a reminder of how challenging the energy market has become – even for companies championing innovative, planet-friendly solutions.

However, there are still government-backed schemes available to help UK households save money on energy bills while making their homes more energy efficient.
