Hundreds of Southend Homes to Get Heat Pumps with £3.47 Million Fund

More than 200 homes across Southend are set to benefit from the installation of heat pumps, thanks to a £3.47 million funding boost. This initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions and combat fuel poverty in the city.

Funding for Green Energy

Southend Council has been allocated £3.47 million under the Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund Wave 3. This funding will be used to install ground source heat pumps (GSHP) in 231 council homes, significantly improving their energy efficiency.

How Ground Source Heat Pumps Work

Ground source heat pumps use the ambient heat from the ground to provide an energy-efficient way to heat homes and supply hot water. This technology helps to reduce energy costs for tenants and supports the city’s climate goals.

Benefits for Residents

The implementation of GSHP technology is expected to provide long-term financial benefits for residents by reducing their energy bills. Additionally, it will contribute to the overall sustainability of council homes.

“We are committed to making our housing more energy efficient and helping residents with the cost of heating their homes,” said Daniel Cowan, leader of the council. “This funding, alongside our own investment, allows us to install modern, sustainable technology that will cut emissions and support tenants facing fuel poverty.”

Council Investment

The council will match fund this allocation through its Housing Revenue Account, ensuring further investment in improving energy efficiency. This project builds on a previous programme that improved 110 council homes with external wall insulation systems.

Further Information

Further details on the project will be shared in the coming months. For more information on the government funding, visit the Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund Wave 3 on the GOV.UK website.

Impact on Energy Bills

Rising Energy Bills The average gas and electricity bill for a typical household in Britain is expected to rise by £85 from April to £1,823 a year, further exacerbating the financial strain on households.
