At the Energy Advice Helpline, we had the opportunity to visit Freddy and Maria, a lovely couple from Barnsley, who qualified for the ECO4 grant. They were eager to share their experience and how their lives have changed since their home was made more energy efficient.
How did you qualify for the ECO4 grant?
Freddy and Maria, both living with disabilities and classified as clinically vulnerable, were able to qualify for the ECO4 grant under Route 3. Thanks to this, their home received new solar panels, insulation, and a modern heating system, which have transformed their daily lives.

What was the process like?
Maria shared how smooth the process was. After filling out the online form, she received a phone call from our team, where we explained more about the grant and the next steps. Within 10 days, a surveyor came to assess their home, and soon after, the installers arrived to complete the work in just a week.

How have you benefited from the ECO4 grant?
The couple expressed that the installations have completely changed how they go about their day-to-day activities. They now enjoy a much better quality of life and no longer have to constantly worry about rising energy bills.
As we all know, energy costs are continually increasing across the UK, leaving millions of households in a difficult position—having to choose between heating their homes or putting food on the table. In response, the UK government, together with energy companies, introduced grants like ECO4 to help qualifying families improve their home’s energy efficiency with no cost to them.
Freddy highlighted just how much their energy costs have decreased since the upgrade:
“Our bills used to be between £180 to almost £200 a month, and now they’re down to £30–£40 after having the new heating system.”
Thousands of families, just like Freddy and Maria’s, are benefiting from the ECO4 grant. Seeing their home firsthand gave us a clear view of the positive impact it has on people’s lives. Freddy now feels more relaxed, as energy costs are no longer a burden, and he can focus on the things he enjoys, like baking and spending time with his community. Additionally, with a warm home, Freddy’s health is improving as well.
