The Boiler Upgrade Scheme, set out to help decarbonisation efforts, has had huge success. By the end of March 2023, nearly 10,000 grants had been paid under the scheme. The high rollout of grants is testament to the success of the scheme.
What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) enables UK households to update their boilers to newer, more energy-efficient models. It does this by providing grants to those who qualify, who can use this money to help cover the cost of the upgrade.
Upgrading your old boiler can end up saving hundreds on your energy bills, but many cannot afford the initial investment into a new model. That’s why the BUS is so crucial for many, enabling them to heat their homes for less.
The UK Government outlines the criteria for the BUS, with a focus on helping the most vulnerable households. These households typically have a poor energy-efficiency, meaning they are costly to heat. Moreover, vulnerable people are more likely to experience fuel poverty, and suffer mentally and physically as a result.
What installations have taken place?
Under the scheme, over 96% of grants were allocated for air source heat pumps. Over 70% of grants issued have been used to fund replacements for fossil-fuelled heating systems.

What are the benefits of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
Upgrading your old boiler has many benefits, for your own home and the wider environment. The BUS makes renewable heating options far more accessible. The scheme drastically reduces the upfront cost of these technologies, which would otherwise be too expensive for many to invest in.
There are further financial benefits to the scheme, as the technologies offered are more energy efficient than old gas boilers. This means significant savings on energy bills every year!
Plus, the advantages of the scheme aren’t just financial. Taking part in the BUS reduces the carbon emissions of individual homes, which helps the UK to reach its 2050 net-zero goal.
What upgrades are available with the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
The scheme offers a range of alternative heating systems. These systems are renewable and more energy efficient than an old gas boiler, meaning they cut costs and carbon emissions. Households who qualify for the scheme will receive a payment towards the cost of the supply and installation of the heating system. You could receive:
- £6,000 towards a Ground Source Heat Pump
- £5,000 towards an Air Source Heat Pump
- £5,000 towards a Biomass Boiler
Ground Source Heat Pumps
Ground source heat pumps take heat from the ground, and use it to heat your home. The typical cost of a ground source heat pump (without the BUS) is £15,000.
Air Source Heat Pumps
Air source heat pumps take heat from the outside air, and transfer it to your home. They work even in temperatures well below 0 degrees and are 3x more efficient than a gas boiler.
Biomass Boiler
Biomass boilers use organic materials to produce heat, such as wood pellets and chips. They are fully carbon-neutral and creating biomass is much cheaper than other sources.
